Happy New Year! Hopefully this year will be a good starting point in career, business and life for all of us. Here comes a new year, new resolutions and new spirit.
It is a time for people to take stock of their lives and declare changes that they want to put in play in the coming year. A new season, a clean slate, another chance to ‘get it right’.
Many resolutions are driven by dissatisfaction in various areas of life. Most common resolutions include: more family and friend time, getting fit/ losing weight, quitting smoking, being happier, quitting drinking, getting out of debt, learning something new, helping others and getting organized.
Sound familiar? Take a deep breath. Experts say that focusing on a single goal can keep you from getting overwhelmed. And once you’ve tackled one, you’ll feel motivated to keep the improvements going.
So how do you go for the goals? There are ninesteps to reach any goal.
Firstly; Get real people. Perhaps you won’t be able to write a book and launch a website and have the perfect yoga butt. But you can choose one, make it a priority and push all the other to-dos lower on your list. Secondly, Be picky. Ask yourself: what would I like to improve in my life right now? What do I most want to change? The right goal is the one that speaks to those wishes. Goals that are personally satisfying are naturally motivating. They’ll also make you happier. With a sense of choice, people apply themselves more fully and they’re more resilient to setbacks. Thirdly, Reach high. A specific directive, like ‘Run a nine-minute mile’ or ‘increase sales by 10 percent’, will fire up people to perform better than if they’re told to run as fast as they can or boost sales as much as possible. Then, Do the write thing. When you write out a goal, it gives your conscious and subconscious a chance to fully absorb your intention. Your objective becomes real and demands a commitment. The next step is See the good and the bad. Visualize not only your goal, but also the challenges you’ll face along the way. Anticipating speed bumps prepares you for the work that’s necessary to achieve success. You also need to Break it down. Goals need to be broken into scalable chunks. You need to work backward from your goal to figure out the steps you need to take to reach it. Hang out with goal-driven people to reach the goal. When we spend time with people who act decisively to get what they want, we begin to pursue our own objectives in a similar manner. So, start spending more time with and bouncing ideas off your most get-things-done friends because we’re wired do what everyone else is doing. Rewarding yourself is an important step too. A reward inspires you to ‘go for it’. The reward is an excellent way to tip the scales back in your favor when you’re just too tired to resist temptation. Lastly, is Make a plan. Strategizing work, no matter the goal. The more you practice planning, the more it will turn into a habit. It becomes less about how strong your goal ‘muscle’ is and more about reflex.
Life is like a roller coaster. It has its ups and downs. But it’s your choice to scream or enjoy the ride.
